The young man grinned. “Hello, Alex.”

He watched in bemusement as Kyle pulled a wallet from his pocket, and then took a sharp breath when he withdrew a razor blade from behind his license. He flushed in embarrassment when Kyle only used it to dig into the wood of the table. Still, the sunlight glinted on the bright metal and caught his eyes, entrancing him.

Stealing a look at his reaction, a smile slid over the boy’s face. He raised the blade and deftly cut his forearm, tracing spidery scars and red lines already there. Crimson blood welled on the white skin.

Alex sucked in his breath and stumbled to his feet. The urge to run away was overwhelming, but he felt trapped by the golden eyes staring at him, unblinking.

“Exquisite,” Kyle whispered. He suddenly grabbed Alex’s wrist, turning its jagged scar to the light. He caressed the puckered skin with his thumb. “As you well know.”

The boy’s hand burned. Alex jerked his arm away, breaking the spell and releasing him from his momentary daze. Kyle’s laughter followed him as he fled.
